This year, celebrities have chosen to show their support for social political campaigns on award show red carpets. After actors and actresses wore black to the Golden Globes and Bafta Awards in support with the Time's Up movement, and musicians put on white roses to show their solidarity with victims of sexual harassment at the Brit and Grammy Awards, Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown has followed their lead.

Brown, who is 14, attended Saturday's Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards in a custom Calvin Klein denim shirt that was embroidered with the names of the 17 teenagers who died in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on Valentine's Day.

The shooting, which was the eighth of 17 to happen on US high school campuses in 2018, sparked an international discussion about gun control and inspired protests in America. This weekend has seen hundreds of thousands of people gather in Washington, New York City, Salt Lake City and other cities in the March for Our Lives and #NeverAgain protests, named after the social media campaigns asking for better gun control.

Brown also had the words "Never Again" embroidered on the chest pocket of her shirt. Winning the award for Favourite TV Actress for Stranger Things, the English actress dedicated her trophy to the victims of school shootings.

“As we saw a moment ago, the March for Our Lives demonstrations that took place all over the world today have inspired me and impacted us all in one way or another,” Millie said in her acceptance speech.

“But more than anything, I get to be up here, and I’m privileged to have a voice that can be heard, one that I can use to hopefully make a positive difference and help influence change.

“OK, so there’s an amazing support, love and kindness in this room right now, and I want to encourage everyone to embrace it and to pass it on.

“For the angels among us, your spirit lives on. This is for you.”

She also posted a tribute on Twitter:

Celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, Paul McCartney, Lin-Manuel Miranda and George and Amal Clooney participated in the Washington protest.
