Western style has had us in a sartorial chokehold for a little while now. While Ralph Lauren has long championed an all-American aesthetic, the trend hit the mainstream last year and is sticking around this season with rodeo-ready denim, prairie dresses, and fringe-adorned accessories spotted all over the SS23 runways.
And it's not just high fashion that has been won over by Westerncore. The couture cowgirl look is being championed by our favourite celebs and influencers, with cowboy boots and denim maxi skirts aplenty on the high street too. It's even sparked microtrends on – you guessed it – TikTok, the platform responsible for giving us the coquette aesthetic, regencycore and many more fashion fads.
You've probably heard of coastal cowgirl (the hashtag currently has almost 80 million views on TikTok) which refers to a beachy twist on the usual ranch style. But we're loving the disco cowgirl look that is slowly gaining traction and was just worn by none other than Millie Bobby Brown.
Attending the opening ceremony for Osaka Comic Con 2023 in Japan, Millie was wearing a bejewlled red co-ord consisting of crop jacket, bustier bra top, and high-waisted hot pants all covered in sparkly coloured stones and studs. The best part of her 'fit has to be her matching cowboy boots. We are here for this head-to-toe show-stopping lewk.
The embellished pieces are all from Annie's Ibiza (Rita Ora and Kate Moss' favourite brand) and part of the ‘Ziggy’ co-ord made from faux leather. Her boots are from the brand’s collaboration with shoe label Terry De Havilland.
If coastal cowgirl is a laidback approach to the Western trend, 'disco cowgirl' is all about high glamour which basically means adding rhinestones to all the cowgirl essentials. Still confused? Just look to Shania Twain and Beyoncé in her Renaissance era, the poster girls for the trend.
Shania's 'fit for the Country Music Awards last month nails the look. Her Chanel purple tweed bra top, micro shorts, and short-sleeve crop jacket elevated her black cowboy hat and thigh-high boots while she added lots of sparkle with diamond jewellery.
