Millicent Simmonds Is Inspired by Young People Helping Their Communities

In light of COVID-19, we’re checking in on our favorite celebrities in My Self-Quarantined Life, a series on what their daily lives look like while social distancing.

During these wild times, Millicent Simmonds has used her platform to help those more heavily impacted by the pandemic. On Instagram, she's been inspired by seeing what other young people have been organizing and posting links to charities providing relief. This mindfulness came from seeing how others have been spending their time.

"The more pictures I saw of celebrities posting pictures of themselves in old dresses and things like that, the more it felt weird because I don’t think the average teenager can really relate to that," the 17-year-old told Teen Vogue. "Especially when they’ve been fired from a job, their parents have lost their jobs or they’re stressed and sad about school. Seeing what they are doing to help in their communities has really inspired me."

In order to find a bit of peace in her personal life, the star of A Quiet Place has tried sticking to a daily schedule. Millicent blocks out her day with things she wants to get done, whether it's her schoolwork or exercise, which has been helping pass the days. But she's also taken a step back for a bit of retrospection on how quickly the world shifted.

"I think I’ve learned how much I took the little things for granted. Taking a quick trip to the store, going through a drive-thru or stopping at a friend's house. Life requires a lot more planning and isn’t as convenient now," Millicent tells Teen Vogue. "My hope for life after quarantine is that we no longer take the little things for granted. That we really cherish the relationships we have, because life can change fast."
