Before she was Miley Cyrus, Grammy-winning provocateur, she was Miley Cyrus, star of Disney Channel's Hannah Montana. And now, it looks like the 31-year-old is returning to her roots.

On April 17, a photo of Cyrus with waist-length brown hair worn under a baseball cap was published on the X account PopCrave. The image was a striking callback to her child star days when she played Miley Stewart, a normal tween girl who moonlighted as her pop star alter ego Hannah Montana.

As she transitioned from kid's TV to MTV, Cyrus underwent a major aesthetic transformation that began with a drastic chop. In her reintroduction to the world, Cyrus debuted a bleached pixie cut. Though she's worn her hair at varying lengths in the intervening years, she's more or less remained a blonde. Which is precisely why her cocoa-colored hair comes as such a shock.

It's unclear from the image as to whether or not she's wearing a wig, but we do know for certain: Fans love it. It might just be the nostalgia factor, or perhaps a projected excitement over a new “era” for the singer, but either way, the reactions to PopCrave's photos were incredibly positive, if not a little dramatic.

Miley Cyrus has slowly been marching toward a full brunette look since late last year, wearing a teased-to-the-gods style in a light golden brown to the Grammys just a few months back. Could this be a hint at darker shades to come? Or does she just sometimes put on a brunette wig when she wants to go incognito in public? Because that would be the real Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana full-circle moment.
