It’s no secret that Miley Cyrus can be a hair chameleon. And in her latest video release, for her new song “Malibu,” she has a half-and-half mix of brunette roots and blond ends. But while some may think her unique choice of style is just Miley being Miley, she actually has a logical reason for rocking the two distinctly different colors at once.

“I like blond and brown — now I don’t have to choose,” the 24-year-old said of her new hairstyle during an interview on the The Cooper Lawrence Show. Further explaining her reasoning, Cyrus explained to one of the hosts, “For chicks, you’ve gotta look a certain way all the time, and I just don’t wanna do that.”

While it seems the “Wrecking Ball” star is simply opposed to looking the same way at all times, a few others chalked it up to laziness. On Twitter, Cooper Lawrence wrote that morning co-host of 106.1 BLI Anthony Michaels “was right” and, Cyrus’s hair “is like that because she’s been too lazy to have it done.” Clairol color director James Corbett also tweeted his opinion, noting, “It’s called resecessionista hair color which has now become a trend. I also learned never to doubt Anthony.”

At the opening of her new video, the singer and actress shows off her ombre look with her hair parted down the center and pulled into two high ponytails with a beach-wave texture. She also flaunts a few other carefree styles, including a pair of braids and a high, loose ponytail. While her hair drastically shows off two hues, her overall vibe seems to be a bit more pared down than usual.

Is Cyrus being unique and inspiring? Or straight up lazy and cheap? One thing’s for sure: She still has one heck of a voice.
