She got it from her dad, but her mom had something to do with it, too. Miley Cyrus explained that her mullet is part DNA and part necessity. During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Cyrus said that it was inevitable that she got a mullet, because it's how her hair naturally grows and it's the only haircut that her mom, Tish, has on offer. Like many people, the pandemic lockdown forced Cyrus to reconsider trips to the stylist, so she enlisted her mom for a trim. Well, her mom's got experience. Cyrus told Jimmy Kimmel that she's been cutting hair since '92 — but added that Tish's only client is Billy Ray Cyrus.

"I already had bangs and they were getting long," Miley said. "And [my mom] said, 'Well I can cut your hair, but I only know how to do one hairstyle, and I've been doing this since 1992 for your dad and for your brothers.' And all my mom can do is a mullet, so I had one option and needed it."

She explained that the mullet is "just kind of a natural shape that [our family's] hair grows in."

Miley's mullet made its debut back in 2019 and Tish trimmed it in May, though Page Six reports that she got some coaching from superstar stylist Sally Hershberger. Though she's no stranger to transformation, Miley has been keeping her mullet through the release of her new album, Plastic Hearts.

During a recent interview with Howard Stern, Miley explained that fans look to her hair as an indicator of her "sanity and sobriety," but she says that it's not necessarily a reflection of anything other than how she wants her hair to look.
