Miley Cyrus Just Got the Edgiest Short Haircut

Miley Cyrus has experimented with her hair several times throughout the past few years. Just last year the singer debuted an edgy, razor-cut “modern mullet” that she got first from her mom, Tish Cyrus, and then with the guidance of celebrity hairstylist Sally Hershberger. But for 2020, she’s going even edgier—and shorter.

Cyrus posted several photos to Instagram this week that show off her new, punk-rock shag cut, which, again, comes after a session with Hershberger. “New Hair. New Year. NEW MUSIC!” she captioned three separate images. Compared with the mullet she was sporting last November, this shag is shorter and wispier, and as Hershberger said in a statement, “It’s a very fashion-forward look yet very no-fuss, both reflective of Miley’s personality.”

Hershberger is known for her shags, and she explained that she kept things pretty natural when it came to Miley’s version. “To get the edgy look, I point-cut her hair and then used a razor to slice it into a shag—it was a very organic process,” she said. “To style it, we did a rough dry, and then I used my 24K Vanity Hair Shaping Balm and 24K Golden Touch Nourishing Dry Oil to finish off the piecey look.”

This hairstyle might also be an indicator of Miley Cyrus’s mood as she starts working on new music, which she's promised a few times now. In December, following her split from husband Liam Hemsworth and rumors she’d ended things with boyfriend Cody Simpson (which were untrue), Cyrus released an emotional holiday song, aptly titled, “My Sad Christmas Song.” She was met with tons of support from her fans, but perhaps she’s moved on from melancholy and is ready for a rock-inspired sound. She hinted as much with pictures she posted later that show her carrying around a guitar.

Either way, we love this look—and can’t wait for the new music.
