She can still buy herself flowers. Miley Cyrus’ Grammys 2024 performance shaded her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth. Miley performed her 2023 single, “Flowers,” at the 66th annual Grammy Awards, which were held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, on February 4, 2024.

During her Grammys performance, Miley seemed to reference her divorce from Liam while singing the bridge of “Flowers.” “I didn’t want to leave you,” she sang before adding the line, “But had to.” She then sang, “I didn’t want to fight” before adding the line, “But we did.” The performance continued with Miley singing, “Started to cry but then I remembered… I just won my first Grammy!”

Earlier in the night, Miley won her first Grammy Award in the “Best Pop Solo Performance” for “Flowers,” which was her lead single from her 2023 album, Endless Summer Vacation. Miley was also nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Flowers.”

After she released “Flowers” and its music video in January 2023, fans speculated that the song was about Miley’s ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth, whom she divorced in January 2020 after a year of marriage. “I never need to be a master at the craft of tricking an audience,” Miley told British Vogue in May 2023 about who “Flowers” is about. “It will set itself on fire all by itself.”

Miley’s sister, Brandi Cyrus, also addressed the speculation in an episode of her podcast “Your Favorite Thing” in January 2023. “It’s so entertaining,” she said. “The song did come out on his birthday — was that on purpose? I don’t know, can’t say. Genius though.”

She continued, “The fans — I love Miley fans so much, they go hard in the paint. The fans on TikTok just keep creating narrative after narrative and it is so funny. It makes Miley seem like an absolute genius, and it’s just too good. Everyday I wake up to a new one… The narratives are f**king hilarious, but it’s so great. It’s the best PR that could ever happen because it gets people talking about the song on TikTok and it’s everywhere. And it’s just so fun to watch it all play out. Miley fans, I love ya.”

When her podcast co-host Wells Adams asked if the rumored “Flowers” Easter eggs — including a reference to Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man,” which Liam reportedly dedicated to Miley at their wedding — Brandi responded, ““I’m not here to say. I’m letting this play out… Only Miley knows the truth.”
