The roller coaster that is Miley Cyrus's romantic life roars on. Just a few weeks after the "Slide Away" singer ended her relationship with Kaitlynn Carter, she's moved on to someone else: Australian singer Cody Simpson. Keep in mind that both of these unions happened after Cyrus announced her divorce from Liam Hemsworth in August. I know, a lot is going on.
But back to the romance at hand: Miley Cyrus and Cody Simpson. Yes, it seems the speculation that these two were an item actually had some weight. On Tuesday, October 8, Cyrus posted a selfie to Instagram from a hospital bed (she's being treated for tonsillitis) in which she explicitly calls Simpson her boyfriend. "BF coming to visit me at the hospy," she wrote, before sharing several pics and videos of Simpson cuddling with her and playing the guitar. So I guess this means things are official?
But how did we get here? Let's take a look back at how their relationship formed:
February 2012: Simpson and Cyrus go way back—they've been friends for a while and have both run in the same circles from time to time. But it seems Simpson had a crush on Cyrus that dates back even further. People surfaced an old video in which Simpson says Cyrus was "his childhood celebrity crush" and confessed that he "knew all the words to her songs, I'm not gonna lie—I'm not ashamed about it at all."
December 2015: Over the years Simpson and Cyrus have struck up a pretty close-knit friendship. Simpson talked about how tight they were in 2015, telling GQ Australia, "Miley is one of my best friends and she helps with some of that transitional stuff—trying to escape your childhood. She's super open-minded, and I'm working on becoming more like that."
October 2019: The romance begins. The friends turned maybe couple are spotted grabbing acai bowls together in Los Angeles, and insiders report they even kissed. Cyrus addressed the rumors on her Instagram Story and wrote about the gendered way in which women have to respond to speculation about who they're dating.
"I am grown now and make choices as an adult knowing the truth/details/reality," she wrote. "People only 'know' what they see on the internet." She added, "Men (especially successful ones) are RARELY slut-shamed. They move on from one beautiful young woman to the next MOST times without consequence. They are usually referenced as 'legends,' 'heart throbs,' 'G,' Ladies Man' etc..... where women are called sluts/whores! I am trying to just THRIVE/survive in a 'mans' world.... If we can't beat em, join em! If our president can 'grab em by the p***y...' Can't I just have a kiss and açaí bowl?!?!"
Simpson then shared a black-and-white photo that shows him giving Cyrus a kiss on the cheek and wrote, "Pre swim breakfast courtesy of baby."
On October 4, a source told Entertainment Tonight that they were just hoping to have a good time together. "Miley and Cody have been friends for years. They have hooked up in the past," the source said. "Cody and Miley have no plans to start dating each other exclusively. They both just want to have fun and are open and honest with each other about that."
A few days later, on October 8, Cyrus ended up hospitalized because of tonsillitis. She shared a ton of footage on her Instagram Stories that confirms she and Simpson are dating. She first shared a selfie that said her "BF" was coming to visit, and then documented that he arrived roses in hand, cuddled with her, and played tons of music for her on his guitar.
Even Justin Bieber seems to approve of the new relationship. On Wednesday, October 9, the newlywed singer left a comment on a shirtless picture Simpson posted of himself and joked, "Ur body is a wonderland." Later, Bieber followed up with "Double date?"—an indication that we could see Simpson, Cyrus, and the Biebers out and about one day. Simpson seemed into the idea; he responded with, "text me."
In an apparent (and subtle) response to breakup rumors, on November 20, Simpson posted a photo (per Yahoo!) of his phone's wallpaper on Instagram Stories that showed an adorable childhood image of a young Cyrus.
