Miley Cyrus and Cody Simpson Have Broken Up After 10 Months of Dating
Miley Cyrus and boyfriend Cody Simpson have called it quits—for now.
TMZ first reported the news, saying the couple broke up some time in the last few weeks, and a source who spoke to People says the same.
Cyrus addressed the news during an Instagram Live promoting her new single, “Midnight Sky,” per E! News.
“A year ago, almost to this exact date, the media tried to tell my story for me and control my narrative, and I'm just not accepting that,” she said. “So today it came out that me and my boyfriend have broken up. It was confirmed by a 'reliable source,' even though no one is reliable in a relationship except the two individuals that are participating in it.”
"But, for right now, two halves can't make a whole and we're individually just working on ourselves to become the people that we wanna be," Cyrus continued. "Like everybody else at this age, we're just deciding who we wanna be with our lives, what we wanna do with our lives. And so don't make it some drama story if next week we're out hanging out or getting pizza. We've been friends for 10 years and we're gonna continue to be friends. Just don't make it something that it is not. And with that being said, I'm done with the bullshit."
Simpson first started popping up on Cyrus's social media back in October 2019 after she was in the hospital for vocal surgery—though they've actually been friends since 2012 when they ran in the same social circles. The relationship came on the heels of Cyrus's divorce from Liam Hemsworth and her whirlwind (but highly publicized) relationship with Kaitlynn Carter.
Once they went Instagram official, Cyrus and Simpson would often pop up on each other's Stories. “Being with Miley is a wonderful thing in my life,” Simpson told the Sydney Morning Herald in April. “She is creative and inspiring, fiercely independent and encourages me to be my own person too. We are both creative individuals who support one another with our work. Miley also inspires my art. There’s some romance in the poems I have written, and yeah, they might be about her. It’s inevitable that what happens in my private life comes out in my work.”
In June, Cyrus revealed she was six months sober.
“I’ve been sober sober for the past six months,” she said on a Variety podcast. “At the beginning, it was just about this vocal surgery…. But I had been thinking a lot about my mother. My mom was adopted, and I inherited some of the feelings she had, the abandonment feelings, and wanting to prove that you’re wanted and valuable. My dad’s parents divorced when he was three, so my dad raised himself. I did a lot of family history, which has a lot of addiction and mental health challenges. So just going through that and asking, ‘Why am I the way that I am?’ By understanding the past, we understand the present and the future much more clearly. I think therapy is great.”
Simpson was allegedly on board with his girlfriend's new lifestyle. "He is very much into clean, healthy living and supports her sobriety," a source told People in July.
