Mikaela Shiffrin Cinches 60th Slalom Win And 97th Win Overall In Her Last Race Of The Season

Mikaela Shiffrin crashed on course in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy in January, and was briefly out on hiatus from the injury. Then, in an act of utter defiance, the U.S. alpine racer won her record-equaling eighth slalom season title last week at the FIS World Cup finals in Saalbach, Austria.

Most recently, on March 16th in the final slalom race of the 2023-24 season, Shiffrin saw her 60th career slalom win, and a record-extending 97th World Cup victory.

“Oh wow, it’s been a wild season,” Shiffrin said in a course-side TV interview. “I’m happy for the final race of the season to go so well. I’m looking forward to next season already.”

Shiffrin recently turned 29, ended this season on a high note and reported that she will not be competing in future speed or Giant Slalom events.

AP News confirmed that while Shiffrin has won nine of the 21 races she competed in this season, she unfortunately had to concede the overall title after missing too many races while out due to her knee injury.

Swiss skier Lara Gut-Behrami is all but confirmed as the new champion.

NBC Sports reports that Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami is the oldest woman to win an Alpine skiing World Cup overall title, going a record eight years between taking the biggest annual prize in ski racing.

The overall standings take into account results from every race across downhill, super-G, giant slalom and slalom, awarding this prize to the best ski racer across all disciplines.

Shiffrin has once again made history and inspired countless skiers to push through to achieve their best. Not only to push themselves physically, but to make decisions that are kind to themselves, to train hard, and to be a role model to future skiers.
