This Midwest Farmhouse Got A Masculine Makeover With A Touch of Vintage

Dann Boyles and partner Chip Minor fell in love with this decrepit 1900 farmhouse in Zeeland, Michigan, at first sight. A fan of all things rusty, crusty, chipped, and storied, Dann—a former interior designer who left the industry to open Rebel, a gift boutique he and Chip own—is unafraid of things like oil stains or torn upholstery.

And Dann certainly doesn't care about pedigree. He's as welcoming of castoffs pulled from his grandparents' garage as he is of deals scored at fancy antiques shops. But while Dann loves to collect things, Chip prefers clutter-free zones. To bridge the divide between the couple's styles, Dann focused on what they both love: graphic typography, things that remind them of their childhoods, and the many friends and family they welcome with open arms, day and night, with and without invitations.

Cozy Layers

The living room sofa is slipcovered in toss-and-wash cotton chambray. The hand-painted antique basket is Dann's favorite item in the room. Layered rugs under the plush coffee table add extra softness and texture.

Mixed Gallery

A collage of sentimental artwork frames a new midcentury-style chair. The gallery wall incorporates embroidery hoop art and small animal antlers among traditional framed artwork. Shiplap wall adds to the farmhouse vibe of the space.

Thrifted Industrial

In the office, two identical IKEA desks match the honey tones of a thrift store floor lamp. Metal roofing material hides a plaster ceiling that didn't fit the homeowners' vision for the space. Mismatched chairs add a thrifted feeling to the space, while a metal light fixture gives an industrial vintage look.

Art Flow

A pine cupboard found at Goodwill stashes overflow dishware in the office. A small gallery wall fuses into accessory displays on top of the cupboard and on its shelves. Red and blue tie the accessories and art together.

Black and White

Dann scored the oak table in the breakfast room at a thrift store for $20, then painted it high-gloss white for a modern touch. A woven natural rug is reminiscent of a vintage lace doily, and an upholstered bench softens the Tolix-style chairs.

Cottage Combo

The dining room hutch fuses a workbench and bookcase from Dann's grandfather with cabinet doors from his great-great-grandmother's kitchen. The worn wood and blue-and-white china gives the space a cottage feel.

Patchwork Floor

Removing some upper cabinets opened up the kitchen. The 1950s base cabinets sport new paint and hardware. Gold hardware and light fixtures tie in the golden tones in the floor tiles.

Dry Bar

A vintage medical desk makes a fine bar cart. A lamp without a shade brings industrial style to this corner of the room. Light-color shelves stand out on top of stormy gray walls.

Pattern Play

A brass bed frame is anchored by a homemade bench crafted from a coffee table and flea-market flag. Linens in different shades and patterns (floral on the curtains, stripes on the duvet) tie the scheme together.

Antique Storage

Vintage suitcases collected by Dann over a span of 20 years stylishly conceal extra blankets and bed linens in the master bedroom. The warm tones stand out against teal walls.

Red Cross

New wainscot in the powder room is painted black to give the traditional feature a modern edge. A small-scale medical tin mounted on the wall provides some medicine-cabinet-like storage. Driftwood surrounds a round mirror, pairing modern and rustic with eye-catching interest.

Upscaled Entertaining

The scene of weekly summer gatherings, this outdoor dining area also attracts nearby friends and family for impromptu brunches. Two wood chairs from a Paris park round out a set of new retro-style white metal chairs. Vintage metal funnels serve as wall-mounted planters.
