It's ingenious, really: The folks at Midea (pronounced my-dea — rhymes with idea...presumably because this is such a groundbreaking concept) have fashioned a window unit that is secured (in a lickety-split setup) with a bracket attached to the base of your frame and buttressed by a triangular exterior brace rather than just leaning against the bottom sash of your window. It's a safer, saner way to go and one that allows you to open your window whenever you feel like it. (Oh, and in case you're wondering: Yes, it comes with an anti-theft mechanism for when the window is closed.)

The other benefit of the U-shape? It lets the window act as an auditory shield between you and most of the A/C's machinery. The result? The U-Smart is nine times quieter than conventionally designed A/Cs.
