Middle-Parted “Prom” Updos Are the Most Unexpected Hair Trend of the Season

The early aughts are having a moment — just ask Usher in Hustlers, the cast of Lizzie McGuire, leopard-print slip dresses, and headbands. And now, those updos you rocked at your senior prom are making a major comeback.

Thanks to celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Bella Hadid, and Rihanna, middle-parted updos that feature volume at the crown and face-framing tendrils are becoming a celebrity staple. Even Meghan Markle has been known to regularly wear the throwback style (and you know something is a major trend once it's reached the royals).

But don't break out the bobby pins and hair spray just yet. While prom styles were rigid enough to withstand twerking to Missy Elliot, Refinery29 notes the 2019 celeb-endorsed look is much messier, offering a high-fashion alternative to the 2000s classic.

See how stars from Priyanka Chopra (sleek and simple) to Kim Kardashian West (with a complicated twist in the back) to Taylor Swift (featuring a romantic braid) wore the style below.

Of course, the '00s prom updo isn't the only retro style making waves in 2019. The '60s-inspired hair flip has been dominating on and off the runways, and the "Bratz Pony" circa 2001 has been a tried-and-true favorite of Kylie Jenner and Bella Hadid.

For most of us, this means we don't have to delete our embarrassing school dance photo albums from Facebook just yet — except for you, Mandy Moore. Some #TBTs deserve to be left in the past.
