Michter’s Brought Back Its Highly Coveted 25-Year-Old Bourbon
If you’re a Michter’s fan, you probably recognize the distillery’s bourbon as being an affordable, available, high-quality option. The 25-year-old version is neither of those first two things, but according to many who have tried it does meet the third criteria. The good news is that it’s back after a three-year hiatus, provided you can find a bottle.
Michter’s 25 Year Old Bourbon is, of course, not produced at the distillery in Shively, Kentucky, given that it has been up and running for less than a decade. No, these barrels are sourced from undisclosed distilleries–do a little internet sleuthing and you’ll find a range of possible origins. According to the brand, master distiller Dan McKee and master of maturation Andrea Wilson are responsible for selecting these special casks, which are practically ancient in bourbon terms–that’s even older than Pappy 23, for reference. But there does seem to be more older bourbon being released these days, whether it’s Eagle Rare 25 or Maker’s Mark Cellar Aged, both of which spent time in climate-controlled warehouses, or the ever-increasing age statements on Knob Creek bottles. So it looks like we’re going to be seeing more of this.

There are some who won’t drink Kentucky bourbon aged for more than about 12 years, pointing to the fact that the climate there will lead to overly tannic, extremely oaky whiskey that has lost its delicate character and complexity. We have not had the good fortune to sample the new release of Michter’s 25, but according to Wilson that is not the case here. “This release of the 25 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon is an outstanding flavor experience without the overly oaked, dusty old whiskey character,” she said in a statement. She also provided some tasting notes–“It is a wonderful journey with its transition through sweet and savory depth, world spices, dark chocolates, fruit characters, and nut oils, almost as if you are eating through a box of fine chocolates. It is an exceptional whiskey for an exceptional achievement in the whiskey world.”
Michter’s 25 Year Old Bourbon is a very limited release. The asking price is $1,500, which is almost as unbelievable as reading the SRPs for the Pappy Van Winkle lineup. Expect to pay a hefty premium for a bottle, with prices surpassing $17,000 for previous releases at websites like Caskers. Good luck, and happy hunting.
