Michigan’s Mount Bohemia Suffers Earliest Closing Day In Resort History

Mount Bohemia in Michigan recently celebrated their 24th annual Mardi Gras, however, while the event was full of sunshine, the resort has not seen normal snow totals overall this season.

Therefore, yesterday (March 3, 2024), was the last day of the ski season. It's officially Mount Bohemia’s earliest closing ever.

Mount Bohemia, with a vertical drop of 900 feet and 585 skiable acres, and according to the caption of the Instagram post above, has been open in April for 20 out of 24 seasons, and 3 of those seasons went into the first week of May.

The resort sees an average of 273 inches per season. This season it saw just 110 inches. Therefore, the resort was forced to close weeks earlier than normal.

Because Mount Bohemia does not make snow, they are fully reliant on what Mother Nature does as far as snowfall. The resort, does, however, offer glades, backcountry sections, and runs as far as 2 miles away from the base area, giving skiers the opportunity to ski backcountry-style terrain through a resort.

Many resorts in Michigan saw difficult seasons this year, with resorts such as Big Powderhorn Mountain Resort delaying its initial opening and executives at Crystal Mountain in Benzie County’s Thompsonville and Boyne Mountain Resort in Charlevoix County’s Boyne Falls reporting slightly lower ski resort sales so far this winter compared to the same period last year.

While this year was warm and did not produce the goods for the ski area to remain open as long as skiers would have hoped, there's always next winter.
