From Town & Country

Michelle Williams and Oscar Isaac are joining forces to adapt Ingmar Bergman's famed 1970s miniseries, Scenes from a Marriage, for HBO. Here's what we know about the limited series.

Williams and Isaac will star as a modern married couple.

As opposed to the original miniseries, which was set in Bergman's native Sweden and contemporary to the 1970s, this new show will take place in modern-day America.

Williams and Isaac will take on the roles played by Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson in Bergman's version—a story of a couple which was in part inspired by Bergman's own relationship with Ullmann.

The Affair's Hagai Levi will serve as showrunner.

Levi wrote and co-created Showtime's The Affair, another series that focused on a troubled relationship. He's also known for his work on HBO's Our Boys, a miniseries that dealt with the 2014 events preceding a war in Gaza, and In Treatment, which was based on his Isreali series Be’Tipul.

It's still early days.

HBO hasn't yet announced any plans for a timeline or release date; hardly surprising, as the project is still in its beginning stages. And like all current and future productions at the moment, any schedule will have to accommodate for the ongoing pandemic.

It's also not yet clear how many episodes the limited series would consist of. (The original Bergman miniseries had six, for what it's worth, and was later condensed for theatrical release.)
