With the release of both her Homecoming documentary on Netflix and a new album of the same name, it’s undoubtedly a huge day for Beyoncé. But the superstar is spending it by showering her praise on a fan and friend close to her heart: the former first lady.

The just-released Time 100 list of the year’s most influential people includes Michelle Obama, who is currently on a European tour in support of her bestselling memoir, Becoming. While fellow honorees Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson received a testimonial written by Gal Gadot, and Sandra Oh by Shonda Rhimes, the magazine has tapped none other than Beyoncé to share her thoughts on Obama.

The singer — who famously sang during the first Obama inauguration celebration — makes her admiration for the former FLOTUS plain in her essay.

“Loving Michelle Obama wasn’t much of a choice,” she writes. “It was something that came naturally, because of how she carried herself. Because she resembled us and was moving in spaces where, as black Americans, we weren’t exactly meant to be, she seemed so powerful.”

She goes on to praise Obama’s “courage” and “discipline” in speaking her mind, and cites her charity work with students. She also alludes to the negative attacks targeting Obama.

“She has continued to open herself up, even if it meant being criticized,” Beyoncé writes. “She has continued to be a portrait of grace.

“I am so grateful that my daughters and my son live in a world where Michelle Obama shines as a beacon of hope who inspires all of us to do better and to be better,” the mother of three concludes.

Many are celebrating the Beyoncé-and-Michelle love.

But the tribute also has some conservative critics complaining that Melania Trump hasn’t received the same glowing media coverage as her predecessor.
