Michelle Obama and "Partner in Crime" George W. Bush Recreated Their Viral Candy Exchange

Former President George W. Bush and former First Lady Michelle Obama seem to be back to their candy-sneaking ways.

At the state funeral for former President George H.W. Bush, who died on Saturday at age 94, the younger Bush was seen slipping Obama what looked to be a piece of candy as he greeted her and the other living presidents and first ladies seated front row at the National Cathedral. Obama, who was seated between her husband, former President Barack Obama, and former President Clinton, smiled at the sweet gesture.

The candy exchange looks like it's becoming a tradition, as the pair was caught swapping sweets in a viral moment earlier this year. Back in September, the 72-year-old was photographed passing Obama a mint during John McCain’s funeral.

The two have developed an unlikely friendship over the years, which the former First Lady previously discussed during an appearance on the Today show in October.

“[President Bush] is my partner in crime at every major thing where all the ‘formers’ gather,” she said. “I love him to death. He’s a wonderful man. He’s a funny man.”

Given Obama’s close relationship with the younger Bush, we’re not surprised that she canceled some of her upcoming book tour in order to attend his father's funeral.

She continued, writing, “I hope readers and ticket holders will understand my decision regarding my desire to attend President Bush’s funeral, and join me in paying tribute to him and his tremendous contribution to our world.”
