Michelle Obama Admits She Stopped Smiling at Trump's Inauguration to Prove a Point

It seems like we finally have an explanation for all those faces former First Lady Michelle Obama made during President Trump’s 2017 inauguration.

During an interview with Good Morning America that aired on Sunday, the 54-year-old shared that she "stopped even trying to smile" as Trump was sworn into office on Jan. 20. In her book, Becoming (out Nov. 13), she said that the celebratory mood had shifted following her husband’s exit from the White House.

"The vibrant diversity of the two previous inaugurations was gone ... Someone from Barack’s administration might have said that the optics were bad, that what the public saw didn’t reflect the president’s reality or ideals,” she writes, according to ABC. “But in this case, maybe it did.”

“Realizing it, I made my own optic adjustment,” she added. “I stopped even trying to smile.”

While Obama has generally steered away from criticizing Trump and his administration since returning to civilian life, we’re not entirely shocked by her recent comments about Trump’s presidency. Just last week, she revealed that she would “never forgive” him for heavily promoting the birther conspiracy theory which insisted Barack was born in Kenya and not Hawaii (which would have made him ineligible for the office of the presidency).

“The whole thing was crazy and mean-spirited, of course, its underlying bigotry and xenophobia hardly concealed,” she writes. “But it was also dangerous, deliberately meant to stir up the wingnuts and kooks.”

She continues, writing that, “What if someone with an unstable mind loaded a gun and drove to Washington? What if that person went looking for our girls? Donald Trump, with his loud and reckless innuendos, was putting my family’s safety at risk. And for this, I’d never forgive him.”

Also in her memoir, Obama shared intimate details of her personal life, including the miscarriage she suffered 20 years ago, and that both of her daughters, 17-year-old Sasha and 20-year-old Malia were conceived with the help of fertility treatments.
