Michael Phelps’ Sons Have Picked Out a Name for Their Baby Sibling & It’s Already a Running Joke

ICYMI: Michael Phelps is expecting Baby No. 4! [Insert joke about the Olympic gold medalist’s swimmers being winners, yada, yada, yada.]
Michael announced that he and his wife Nicole Phelps were expecting back in September with a casual Instagram post that included photos of Nicole’s baby bump (like the one below!). A month later, she shared the news on her Instagram. At the end of a caption about her and Michael’s anniversary, she added, “For those that are wondering … yes! we’re expecting our 4th Phelps in 2024 💙💙💙💙.”

After such casual announcements, Nicole divulged many more details to Today.com. To start, Baby No. 4 was not planned. Nicole only found out when she went to the doctor to begin treatment for headache pain. When she told her doctor her period was two days late, she was told to take a pregnancy test because she couldn’t get started if she was pregnant. She remembered thinking, “There’s no way.”
“After I took the test, I came out of the bathroom and Michael asked, ‘What’s wrong?’ He said I looked like I had seen a ghost,” Nicole said. “He was ecstatic. Michael has been excited from the start.”

“Listen, I’m a mom and I know how much work that it takes,” she said, getting really candid about why her excitement wasn’t instant. “I personally believe in pretty much sacrificing two years of my life to this new baby. But we are so excited. I don’t even want to call him a surprise because he is wanted. He’s the bonus we didn’t know we needed.”
Did you catch that? She and Michael — who are mom and dad to sons Boomer, 7, Beckett, 5, and Maverick, 4 — are expecting a boy! Busybodies keep telling her she “needs that girl,” but Nicole is having none of it, insisting she doesn’t.
“I would have loved to have a daughter for Michael so he could have that father-daughter bond that I experienced growing up,” Nicole says. “But I strongly believe you’re given what you’re supposed to have, and I’m really excited to have another boy.”
And his big brothers are too! So much so that they’ve already chosen a name. (We’ll see if it actually pans out.)
“They love the name Drifter,” Nicole said. “The running joke is that the baby’s name is going to be Drifter.”
How chill is that? And hilarious given that his dad — who is known as the “Flying Fish” for his unparalleled swimming abilities — is anything but a drifter.
