The 2016 Olympics had many highlights. Katie Ledecky being an absolute monster, Simone Biles proving herself as basically the best gymnast whoever lived, and Laurie Hernandez being simultaneously super talented and #coolerthanyou as she winks at the judges before her floor routine, like, damn girl — just to name a few.

Michael Phelps won a few medals, but his shining moment was definitely the #phelpsface.

You know what we’re talking about. Twitter immediately went ham, captioning his expression to make us laugh even harder.

And, our personal favorite…

And now, finally, Marie Claire reports, Michael Phelps reveals what he was thinking when he was caught on camera with #PhelpsFace during an interview with Jimmy Fallon.

“The worst is, I was sitting in the ready room and I remember, like, I always know there’s always two cameras in the upper right hand corner, right before we walk out and I’m, like, sitting there, spitting water, like, ‘yeah, what is going on?’ As I’m making a face, I’m was like, ‘Yep, that’s on camera…someone will pick that one up tomorrow.'”

Wooooops. We wonder if Michael Phelps knew just how popular the expression would get. People are even getting tattoos of it! Whatever the reason for #PhelpsFace, we’re just glad it happened.
