Michael Jordan Wears the Same Watch Brand as Iron Man

Welcome to Watches of the Week, where we'll track the rarest, wildest, and most covetable watches spotted on celebrities.

This week, I wrote about several watch brands that approach their duty to telling time like the great Greek philosophers might—they believe that maybe it’s not as important to tell the exact time as it is to make you feel differently about the here and now. “What’s important to actually do is create consciousness, so that people become conscious about their time,” said Felix Baumgartner, Urwerk’s co-founder. Michael Jordan, of all people, wore one of these time-bending watches during NBA All-Star weekend. The Urwerk UR-202S, released in 2011, was the brand’s first piece to come on a metal bracelet instead of a leather strap. It looks like something Jordan pilfered from one of the Monstar aliens from Space Jam before they went back to their home planet. Best of all, because of the shape of the watch, Urwerk refers to it as the “Hammerhead.” How freaking cool is that? Also this week, Jackie Chan wears a Richard Mille and Stormzy pulls a timepiece doubleheader.

Michael Jordan’s Urwerk UR-202S

Maybe Michael Jordan and Urwerk was the watch-athlete connection under our noses the whole time. Urwerk is the brand of choice for those capable of superhero-type acts. In Avengers: Endgame Robert Downey Jr. wore a UR-105 as Iron Man. It adds up that the guy capable of soaring from the free throw line would also gravitate towards Urwerk.

Stormzy’s Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Rainbow

Around these parts, we get excited when people are able to put together two big fits in the span of one day—the hallowed Second Fit. Stormzy performed a slightly different but no less difficult task the night of the Brit awards. The grime rapper arrived at the ceremony wearing a Rolex Daytona “Rainbow,” which has become the most trusted secret weapon in a celebrity’s red-carpet arsenal of late. But after the awards were handed out, Stormzy switched into an equally blinged out Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711-110P. Sunday night, Stormzy invented what we’ll call the Re-Watch.

Jackie Chan’s Richard Mille RM 053

Longtime Richard Mille fan Jackie Chan has no shortage of very cool watches from the brand. One features a twisting dragon and tiger in a pre-battle coil. This one modernizes a 100-year-old challenge that revolutionized watchmaking: how do you make a watch for polo? In 1931, Jaeger-LeCoultre answered that question with a watch that could be flipped over completely to hide behind a tough steel shell. But Richard Mille doesn’t want to force customers to choose between playing polo and knowing the time—that would be downright cruel. So for Argentinian polo player Pablo Mac Donough, the brand made a watch with a slick steel shield of a case that protects the movement inside. The hours and minutes indicators are even tilted to the exact angle that makes reading the time when riding horseback as simple as possible. Chan wore the watch while walking the runway for Chinese fashion brand Li-Ning.

A$AP Ferg’s Jacob and Co. Five Time Zone

What a couple weeks it’s been for Jacob & Co. Last week, Drake wore a piece from the brand you can play roulette on, which is as crazy in practice as it sounds. And then A$AP Rocky wore the brand’s Five Time Zone, which the same watch A$AP Ferg was spotted in this week. Honestly, there is absolutely zero shame in taking cues from one of the world’s top-three most stylish people.

Chris Pratt’s Panerai Luminor

Brawny, beefy, handsome, an action star, made for the Royal Italian Navy—and we’re not just talking about Chris Pratt here. The Panerai Luminor is apparently the new choice for Hollywood’s biggest popcorn-movie actors, from Pratt to Dwyane Johnson.

Luka Doncic’s Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

Baby’s first All-Star game called for an All-Star watch. Luka Doncic’s Royal Oak Audemars Piguet has been worn by almost all of his fellow all-stars: LeBron, Anthony Davis, James Harden and Chris Paul all have Royal Oaks. Reminds me of that old tune: Hey now, you’re an all-star, get your watch on, Royal Oak. And all that glitters is gold.
