Saturday Night Live star Michael Che is doing more than just bringing people a late-night laugh during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a post he shared to his Instagram, he revealed that he'll be paying the rent this month for all 160 residents of the New York City Housing Authority building where his grandmother lived before dying from the coronavirus last week.

"its crazy to me that residents of public housing are still expected to pay their rent when so many new yorkers can't even work," the "Weekend Update" co-host and co-head writer of SNL wrote in a post. "obviously i can't offer much help by myself. but in the spirit and memory of my late grandmother, im paying one months rent for all 160 apartments in the NYCHA building she lived in."

Last week, Che revealed in a (since deleted) Instagram post that his grandmother had died of COVID-19, and a few days later paid tribute to her on the first "At-Home" edition of Saturday Night Live by signing off from "Weekend Update" by calling himself "Martha's Grandbaby."

Che made a call to action for New York figures to figure out a way to make the state's rent situation more manageable. "i really hope the city has a better plan for debt forgiveness for all the people in public housing, AT THE VERY LEAST."

Last week, when Saturday Night Live unveiled its first "At-Home" show, with cast members—Che, Colin Jost, Pete Davidson, Kate McKinnon and the rest of the bunch—all broadcasted remotely from their homes. It's not known if and when the show will return for another episode, but pulling together such a show was surely no easy feat, especially for Che, who had so recently suffered a personal tragedy.

He closed his note out by shouting out two very public-facing government figures, along with a hip-hop legend (in his usual humorous fashion). "deblasio[sic]! cuomo! diddy! let's fix this! page me!" he wrote at the bottom of his post, referencing New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, and Sean "Diddy" Combs, the music and fashion mogul.
