If football fans were hoping that the Super Bowl would give them a break from 2020's constant onslaught of political news, they're in for an unfortunate surprise. Both Donald Trump and Michael Bloomberg have reportedly shelled out around $10 million for 60-second ad spots during the big game, in support of their current campaigns.

Bloomberg, famously, has been self-funding his run in the Democratic primary, spending millions from his personal fortune to buy up TV ad space around the country. Trump, for his part, has a nine-figure war chest from his reelection campaign to draw on.

"The biggest point is getting under Trump’s skin," Michael Frazier, a spokesman for the Bloomberg campaign, told the New York Times. Frazier added that by "taking the fight to Trump," the Super Bowl ad "is part of Mike’s strategy of running a national campaign that focuses on states where the general election will be decided, parts of the country that are often overlooked."

It's not known when during the Super Bowl broadcast Bloomberg's ad is slated to air, but a spokesman for the Trump campaign, Tim Murtaugh, told the Times to expect the President's spot in the first half. "We got in early, which gave us prime ad position early in the game," he said.

Although Super Bowl ad space is coveted in many industries, it's generally less popular among politicians, who often favor spending smaller sums in strategic markets. But Bloomberg is running an atypical primary campaign, and Trump's bid for reelection has been unusual from the start, in that he essentially never stopped campaigning.
