Michael B. Jordan Has Talked 'Superman' with DC

Now that DC have gone ahead and recast Bruce Wayne, speculation has turned to who might step into Henry Cavill's shoes to play Clark Kent. And according to talk in Hollywood, one actor with some big ideas about the DC hero's future is none other than Marvel villain, Michael B. Jordan.

"To help find a way to make Superman relevant to modern audiences, studio brass has been polling lots of high-profile talent," reports Variety. "There have been discussions with J.J. Abrams, whose company Bad Robot recently signed a massive first-look deal with the studio, and there was a meeting with Michael B. Jordan earlier this year with the Creed star pitching Warners on a vision for the character."

What this vision entails exactly has yet to be revealed, although it's possible that Jordan based his idea on incarnations of the character who have appeared in the comic books, including Val-Zod, a black Superman from Earth 2, and Calvin Ellis, a Superman based on former president Barack Obama.

Earlier this year, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson voiced his support for a black Superman in the DC Universe, alluding to the success that the MCU has had with Black Panther. "I think, obviously Marvel has done a tremendous job in building out," he said. "And also, you know, for me, DC, we're doing Black Adam with Warner Bros. and DC. We're very excited about that. So, I think, you know, as everything builds and grows, and you take the temperament of society and what's happening, and I think here in Hollywood... especially with franchises and characters and publicly traded companies who are sensitive to that sort of thing. So yeah, I think they're doing a great job. Maybe one day we will see a Black Superman."

The mention of J.J. Abrams is also pretty exciting, given that the director has been trying to get his hands on Superman for years (he worked on his own script for a revival of the character before Superman Returns pipped him to the post). And now that his Star Wars commitments are winding down with The Rise of Skywalker, Abrams might finally be available.

Sadly, the report in Variety also states that should this movie go ahead, audiences might have to wait a while. "Jordan isn’t ready to commit to taking on the project since filming doesn’t seem likely to happen for several years and he has a full dance card of projects. Insiders think that a new Superman film is unlikely to hit screens before 2023, given that there’s no script and no director attached."
