Michael B. Jordan Is Producing a Monster Movie Set in Detroit
Black Panther and Creed star Michael B. Jordan is teaming up with Jordan Vogt-Roberts, the filmmaker behind 2017’s monster smash Kong: Skull Island, on a brand new creature feature.
Jordan and Alana Mayo will produce the as-yet-untitled movie through their company Outlier Society, which has a first look deal with Warner Bros, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Vogt-Roberts will also produce, in addition to directing.
Plot details on this new monster movie remain top secret, although it has been confirmed that the action will take place in director Vogt-Roberts’ hometown of Detroit. The project is currently in need of a screenwriter to work on Vogt-Roberts’ original idea.
“If you asked me [what] three of my favourite things are at any given moment I’d likely say ‘Detroit, monster movies, and Michael B. Jordan,’” Vogt-Roberts told io9. “So I figured out a way to combine them all into a single project.”
Vogt-Roberts broke onto the scene with the 2013 coming-of-age movie The Kings of Summer, and went on to direct the pilot and several episodes of FX comedy series You’re The Worst as well as Nick Offerman’s stand-up special American Ham.
His first major studio picture, Kong: Skull Island, was a reboot of the King Kong franchise and the second installment in Legendary Entertainment’s MonsterVerse series after 2014’s Godzilla. Following the success of Skull Island, which grossed $566 million worldwide, Vogt-Roberts was hired to direct the upcoming Metal Gear Solid movie.
This collaboration marks Michael B. Jordan’s growing clout as a producer: Outlier Society co-produced HBO’s dystopian Ray Bradbury adaptation Fahrenheit 451 (in which Jordan also starred) and he recently acquired the rights to Booker Prize-winning author Marlon James’ fantasy epic Black Leopard, Red Wolf.
On-screen, Jordan currently stars in Rooster Teeth anime Gen:LOCK. He will next play the social justice activist Bryan Stevenson in biopic Just Mercy, based on Stevenson’s memoir.
