Michael B. Jordan has a lot going on these days. There is, of course, the upcoming, mystery-shrouded project that will see him reunite with longtime collaborator Ryan Coogler. Then there's his new beverage brand, Moss, which blends sea moss—it's good for you!—with juices and other tasty, healthy stuff. To top it off, the 36-year-old actor is now the face of David Yurman, starring in a campaign highlighting a new high jewelry collection dubbed The Vault.

This is a busy man, is what I'm saying. But he wasn't so wrapped up that he couldn't catch up with Esquire for a quick chat about everything he's up to. So, I hopped on the phone with him to talk about how crucial the right team is, dressing simply while still having fun, and what we can expect from him in the coming year. Read on for a few highlights from our conversation, which has been edited for length and clarity.

On finding the right team for the campaign

At this point in my life, I was looking at brands that I closely identify with. I saw the care, the artistic vision, the attention to detail, and the legacy of David Yurman passing that on to his son, Evan [who is now CEO]. Having never really done jewelry before, I felt like it was a cool first impression to the world, and it just aligned. And being able to work with the team and have a real contribution of the talent and what other artists we were using to help bring this vision to life was important. Tyler Mitchell is an amazing photographer and creative genius who we were lucky enough to collaborate with. Jason Bolden, my stylist, incorporated a lot of the fashion. With Leo Bolsey and Yeva Lali, the creative directors on our side, it was definitely a team effort. There's a lot of illusion of collaboration that goes on in the town and I felt like this one was very honest and pure.

On getting dressed for work versus day-to-day life

You definitely got to change it up a little bit. Me personally, I'm way more relaxed. I would show up to everything in sweats if I could. But with a campaign or red carpet, I think we look at it objectively, "What does this thing need? What are we trying to accomplish? What image are we trying to portray right now? Where am I at in my life, film or career-wise? What type of place are we in? What does the world need? What do they need more of?" All of those things, all of those elements come together in a conversation of what we're trying to present and how do we get the most people engaged in a real way.

On his style evolution

I take a little bit more risk now. I'm still really simple at the core, so I'm happy with just being comfortable. But listen, I put on other people's clothes for a living. Daily, every project, I'm wearing somebody else's shoes. So when I get a chance to actually wear my own, it's sometimes just something bare and chill and comfortable. But I think over the years, you try to take more risks. Start to not give a fuck as much. A little confidence is good to have as you start to experiment and you find your style. Mine is like a chameleon. I blend in to certain places while standing out.

On that Ryan Coogler project—and what else he has coming up

I can't say much of anything about it other than I'm teaming back up with my guy Ryan. This is probably fifth project together, which is crazy. I'm really excited for people to find out more as things roll out. And The Thomas Crown Affair is another project that I'm really, really excited about. Just how much fashion plays into that—and jewelry and the cars and suits—and just that caper-thriller. A heist film at its core with the love story is something that I'm really excited about.
