Metro Detroit greenhouses are starting to open for the spring: What to know
Gardeners eager to dig out their trusty trowel and get to digging, take heart.
Spring is finally here in Michigan and local greenhouses are opening or will soon open. Here are a few locations in metro Detroit that will help you and your green thumb.
Schwartz's Greenhouse
Location: 30705 Sibley Rd., Romulus
Opens: Saturday
Hours: 9 p.m.-6 p.m. daily
Family-owned since 1939, Schwartz's Greenhouse has 12 acres of greenhouses within its garden center. Schwartz's grows produce and bedding plants, and have a selection of annuals, perennials and gardening supplies.
Ruhlig Farms and Gardens
Location: 24508 Telegraph Rd., Brownstown
Opens: Thursday
Hours: 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Saturday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday
Ruhlig Farms and Gardens, home to a fourth-generation farming family, was established in 1970. Ruhlig has provided produce and supplies to the Detroit area for over 40 years. It has a selection of flowering annual flats, hanging baskets and decorative planters, in addition to fresh produce.
Barson Greenhouse
Location: 6414 N. Merriman Rd., Westland
Opens: Already open
Hours: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday
Barson Greenhouse's produce is Michigan grown. The greenhouse offers gardening seminars and a collection of produce, including cold crop veggies.
Graye’s Greenhouse
Location: 8820 N. Lilley Rd., Plymouth
Opens: Already open
Hours: 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday
Graye’s Greenhouse opened its doors in 1945 and grows houseplants, vegetables and perennials, and hosts weddings, photography sessions, seasonal events, artist markets and workshops.

Block's Stand and Greenhouse
Location: 29160 Eureka Rd., Romulus
Opens: End of April
Hours: TBD
Block's Stand and Greenhouse carries a collection of flowers, hanging baskets, patio pots, perennials, shrubs and roses. It also carries fresh produce and is known for corn that is grown on site.
Deneweth's Garden Center
Location: 16125 22 Mile Rd., Macomb Township
Opens: End of April
Hours: 9 a.m.-6 p.m. daily
Certified by the Michigan Agriculture Enviromental Assurance Program, Deneweth's Garden Center carries a multitude of flowers, vegetables and herb plants.
Bogie Lake Greenhouse
Location: 1525 Bogie Lake Rd., White Lake
Opens: Already open
Hours: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday
Bogie Lake Greenhouse's selection of annuals, perennials, succulents and edibles have been locally grown since 1987. In addition to produce, it offers workshops and open planting events for Oakland County residents.
