The Met Gala 2020 Will Be All ‘About Time: Fashion and Duration’

The theme for the Met gala 2020 has been revealed, so we can start making guesses at what the first Monday in May will look like.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute announced its annual exhibition will be called “About Time: Fashion and Duration.” It’ll open on May 7, 2020. The glitzy gala that’s thrown in honor of the exhibit will be cochaired by Louis Vuitton’s Nicolas Ghesquière, Anna Wintour, Emma Stone (a Louis Vuitton brand ambassador), Meryl Streep, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

“I wanted to do an exhibition focused on the collection, but not a traditional masterworks exhibition,” Andrew Bolton, the curator of the Costume Institute told the New York Times. “Something that connects to the zeitgeist, and what people are talking about now…. It’s about time.” Per the Times, the exhibit is “inspired in part by the novels of Virginia Woolf and the theories of the early-20th-century French philosopher Henri Bergson.” The show itself will include 160 pieces of women’s fashion.

“Fashion is indelibly connected to time,” Bolton continued. “It not only reflects and represents the spirit of the times, but it also changes and develops with the times.”

Next year’s Met gala will be extra special, since 2020 marks the 150th anniversary of the museum. We can only imagine how celebrities and designers will interpret a concept as amorphous as time—but we can’t wait to find out. In the meantime, let’s take a look back at how the famous cochairs have dressed for Met galas past.
