Met Gala 2020 Canceled: Everything You Need to Know

After much back-and-forth, the Met Gala 2020 is canceled. On May 10, Vogue announced this year's installment of the iconic, over-the-top event to benefit the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art was officially canceled in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The Met has endured much in its 150 years and today continues as a beacon of hope for the future. This museum is also a profound reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the power of art to offer comfort, inspiration, and community. As we endure these challenging and uncertain times, we are encouraged by looking forward to the day when we can once again welcome all to enjoy the Met’s collection and exhibitions," the museum's president, Daniel H. Weiss, said in a statement.

The gala was first postponed in March as concerns around the pandemic grew, with Anna Wintour herself saying, “Due to the unavoidable and responsible decision by the Metropolitan Museum to close its doors, About Time, and the opening night gala, will be postponed to a later date."

While there will be no gala this year, the museum has plans to re-open its legendary doors this summer. Currently, the Met is set to re-open (with precautions) in August. The exhibition About Time: Fashion and Duration, which was supposed to be the theme of the 2020 gala, is still set to open this year. The opening day is currently scheduled for October 29.

Even though we'll have to wait until 2021 to see some more jaw-dropping red carpet fashions of our favorite celebrities and designers, it will be worth it — especially as the fashion world continues to take important precautions to keep its members safe.
