Mesa Leadership revives Oakwood Care's surroundings

Apr. 27—One piece of the 10-month Mesa Leadership Training and Development Program is a community project that all class members undertake and this year, the Class of 2024 gave Oakwood Creative Care's outdoors surroundings a stunning new look.

"This transformation project has brought new life to the outdoor community space, creating a vibrant hub for all to enjoy," a Mesa Leadership spokeswoman said of the project at Oakwood's Town Center facility, 247 N. Macdonald in downtown Mesa.

"The project's primary objective was to establish a serene and welcoming outdoor space where residents can enjoy the outdoors, engage in social activities, and find solace in nature," the spokeswoman said, adding:

"The class recognizes the positive impact of well-designed outdoor spaces on mental well-being. It aims to create an environment that fosters joy and comfort for individuals grappling with cognitive or physical challenges."

Oakwood Creative offers activities support services and activities for people with dementia, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's or stroke.

The revitalization project included the addition of new landscaping, seating areas, and fully accessible surroundings, making it a destination for their community to gather, relax, and engage with nature.

"We are thrilled to unveil the results of the Oakwood Revitalization Project," said Kim Van Riper, Class of 2024 president. "This project embodies the spirit of community collaboration and showcases the potential for positive change when individuals come together for a common goal."

The Mesa Leadership Training & Development Program was inaugurated in 1981 to help people who want to serve the community meet and learn about the people and organizations that make the city tick.

Sponsored by the Mesa Chamber of Commerce and administered by volunteers who serve as board members, program and curriculum development committee members, and community liaisons, the program culminates with a graduation ceremony.

This year's class will graduate May 3 at Mesa Country Club.
