Meryl Streep Screens ‘Sophie’s Choice’ for Cate Blanchett, Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and More

New York Fashion Week doesn’t technically start until later this week, but as always the party crowd has already begun circulating. On Tuesday night, Lanvin hosted a screening of “Sophie’s Choice” in honor of the film’s 40th anniversary, with cast members Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline and Peter MacNicol at the center of the night.

Cate Blanchett, Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman, Claire Danes, Rupert Friend and Aimee Mullins, Louisa Jacobson, Steven Soderbergh, Sarita Choudhury, Pat Cleveland, Holland Taylor, Zoe Buckman, Gina Gershon, Matthew Modine, Laurie Simmons, Marilyn Minter, Nancy Jarecki, and Lauren Remington Platt were some of the guests who filed into the theater at MoMA, where Siddhartha Shukla, Lanvin’s deputy general manager, greeted the room before Streep, Kline and MacNicol reflected on the film.

“We are a few of the only ones still standing that made this film,” Streep told the room. “There are a few here, my hair and makeup, and I believe the wardrobe woman, but the visionaries who birthed ‘Sophie’s Choice’ are not — the great hearted. William Styron, the beautiful soul that was; Alan Pakula, the master of light; Néstor Almendros, the cinematographer.”

MacNicol told the room one of his favorite things the late Pakula said to him.

“Something he often said was, ‘deny me none of your riches.’ Well, I hope we did him justice.”

“Sophie’s Choice” was Kline’s first role, and he told the room that Pakula “spoiled me for life.”

“He cast me in my first film and began, for better or worse, my film career,” he said, before adding that filming “Sophie’s Choice” was “the most joyous, the most creative experience of my entire career.”

After the film, the crowd moved over to the Baccarat Hotel, where discussions and drinks continued.
