Meryl Streep and her longtime husband Don Gummer have separated after four decades of marriage. And while the news was just announced on Saturday morning, the two actually ended their relationship more than six years ago.

“Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart,” a representative for the Oscar-winning actress said in a statement to People, while Page Six was the first to report the news.

Streep and Gummer — who is a sculptor from Louisville, Kentucky — were last seen publicly together at the 2018 Oscars.

The two met through Streep's brother in 1978 — around the same time the actress was mourning the death of her boyfriend actor John Cazale, who died of lung cancer. Streep and Gummer married six months later at her parents' house and during their time together, they welcomed four children — a son, Henry, and daughters Mamie, Grace, and Louisa.

Back in 2002, Meryl opened up about her marriage with Gummer while speaking with Vogue, telling the magazine that "goodwill and willingness to bend — and to shut up every once in a while" was the secret to their long-lasting relationship. "There's no road map on how to raise a family: It's always an enormous negotiation," she said per People, adding: "But I have a holistic need to work and to have huge ties of love in my life. I can't imagine eschewing one for the other."
