Don’t tell Miranda Priestly

Meryl Streep’s May flowers bloomed a bit early this year.

They emerged on April 26th, printed on a long-sleeve floral maxi dress that she wore to support her friend Nicole Kidman at the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award Gala in Los Angeles.

Her dress — a deep navy adorned with a large-scale, pastel pink flower pattern — easily made a statement thanks to its combo of florals and puff sleeves. She wore it with her long hair draped atop her shoulders and a pair of smart-looking glasses.

We’re not sure that Streep’s character, Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada, would approve of the on-the-nose fashion choice (“Florals, for spring? Groundbreaking.”), but she isn’t alone in embracing the trend. Lots of stars, including Pamela Anderson, Chrissy Teigen, and Reese Witherspoon, wear flowery dresses this time of year.

Outside the fictional magazine offices, florals for spring are a welcome, reliable staple, since they usher in the new season with a bright bang after a winter of wearing heavy, dark layers. And wearing them in dress form is the go-to for a reason: Floral maxi dresses like Streep's make getting dressed for spring and summer events super easy.

You can wear one to a baby shower, a birthday party, a dinner date, and even a wedding. And they’re long enough to keep the spring chill at bay. Below, browse some classic floral dress styles that resemble Streep’s — prices start at $40.

If you like the idea of a floral dress but prefer some pattern clashing to mix it up and steer away from the expected, this bohemian-inspired dress is a good choice. It has a delicate stripe pattern on the ends of the sleeves and the bottom hem of the dress that perfectly accents the flowers. Visually, it adds a lot of interest and texture and sets this dress apart from most other floral maxis. It’s available in six patterns and can be machine washed.
