Staying comfortable in cold weather starts from the bottom up. The warmest jacket won’t be much help if your feet get wet and cold trudging through snow or walking in the rain. Outdoor and hiking brands make some of the best options for cold weather, and Merrell’s aptly named Thermo Chill boot is a warm, waterproof style from a brand known for making comfortable and reliable hiking footwear.

At its $130 list price, the Thermo Chill is already a great value for a waterproof winter boot. It’s discounted by 25% right now, dropping the price to under $100. It’s available in any color you want (as long as it’s black). Sizes range from 8 to 15, including half sizes and several wide sizes.

The upper is made from leather with a polyurethane coating that helps block out moisture. The 5-millimeter deep lugs provide secure traction when walking on wet ground or through snow. Panels on the toes and sides also offer extra protection from rocks and debris. Speed hooks and a pull tab assist in putting the shoes on.

The boots have comfortable features on the inside as well. A breathable waterproof membrane helps keep feet from overheating, and the boots feature lightweight insulation for warmth. A fleece lining keeps the inside of the boot feeling soft. The cushioned insole is removable as well, so you can replace it if needed.

Shoppers were impressed with the performance of these boots in icy conditions, with one writing that the boots were “warm in 0 degree F weather,” adding, “I have Raynaud’s and my feet get really, really cold. With these boots and a pair of mid-weight wool socks, I was fine down to 0 degrees for two hours snowshoeing.”

Another appreciated the boots standout features, saying they were “lightweight, warm and a strong tread,” and added that they were “perfect for the Canadian winter.” One shopper agreed, writing that the boots were “comfortable, warm, and dry” on “snowy, icy trails.”

Other shoppers praised the thick tread on the boots.“I love the tread on icy surfaces,” one shopper wrote. Another hiked through Iceland, “including inside a glacier,” and appreciated that the boots “kept me stable and my feet dry at all times.”

Whether you’re hiking through a glacier or just taking the dog out on an icy morning, consider picking up these top-rated boots from Merrell for under $100.
