Mercury Is Going Into Retrograde: How Solange, Emma Roberts, and Other Celebs Are Bracing Themselves

The good news: This week marks the debut of REED, a high-low collab between design titan Reed Krakoff and the department store Kohl’s. For $109 or less, you can score his iconic bag shapes in vegan leather, and if you buy one online now, you’ll get about 20 percent off your purchase. Yay!

The bad news: This week is our last gasp of sanity before Mercury in retrograde wrecks the celestial balance. From April 28 (next Thursday) until May 22, all things involving communication, contracts, and computer codes will reach various levels of “Oh, sh*t” — at least according to astrology. No!

How to protect ourselves from cosmic chaos? We asked Krakoff and his launch dinner’s guests of honor (read: gorgeous, famous people) for their survival strategies.

“Oh, believe me, I know it’s happening, and I’m already preparing for it. I have crystals and white candles in the house to help [the energy] stay clean. I take astrology very seriously, because in my experience, it’s very true — when Mercury is in retrograde, things always do go wrong. I can’t even name a specific thing, because something always happens: Your phone dies out of nowhere, your email stops working, you can’t find a plane ticket … it’s always a good time to learn how to roll with changes and laugh at yourself, because if not, you’ll go insane.”

“You know, at first I used to hear about Mercury in retrograde all the time, especially when I lived in L.A. And I was kind of skeptical. … But sh*t does get f**ked up! My computer just completely died during the last Mercury in retrograde. Out of nowhere. It’s real. You’ve just got to face it head-on and learn to let go — and laugh.”

“I tend not to put too much faith in astrology, because I’m more driven by logic, facts, numbers. … Crystals are interesting from a design perspective; they look amazing. But I don’t think they can change your life. … But if you need [Mercury in retrograde] as motivation to get more organized, clean up your office, things like that, then by all means. Anything that motivates you — use it!”

“I had no idea Mercury was going into retrograde. I don’t watch things like astrology too closely. Honestly, I’d rather not know, because once something gets into your head — oh, this is going to be a tough week — it can become real, just through the power of your thoughts. Who needs that?”

“I believe in astrology a lot. In fact, it shifts into Taurus today, so I just posted a Taurus Gift Guide on my blog. … My daughter [Marlowe, 20 months] is a Leo with a Leo rising, and everything they say about Leos is so true. She’s already so talkative, so brave … and she has the best hair. I’m pregnant with a son now. Isn’t technology amazing? We already know it’s a son! And he’s supposed to be a Libra, which I think is a good balance in our house. As for Mercury in retrograde, it’s definitely inconvenient — and it’s definitely real! — but it’s not the end of the world. It’s a good time to learn more patience, because something always gets held up. But using it as a lesson for yourself, and not something to dread, seems like the smartest way to go.”
