Mental Health Day activities set for downtown

May 4—A Mental Health Day event with activities and an invitation to wear Star Wars costumes is set for downtown McAlester.

Activities are scheduled from 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, along Choctaw Avenue.

They are set in the vicinity of the new downtown pavilion/outdoor stage, at the intersection of Choctaw Avenue and First Street.

Courtney Beene and Max Blansett of the McAlester Event and Enterprise Team, known as MEET, are organizers of the event. The group has also hosted previous downtown McAlester events along Choctaw Avenue.

Several resource booths are scheduled to be set up for the event, including from the Carl Albert Mental Health Center and from Windhorse McAlester Behavioral Health, organizers said.

Organizers are encouraging attendees to have some fun with the event.

"We're asking people to wear green or to wear something from Star Wars," Beene said.

Beene noted the event is set for May 4, which works with the Star Wars-related saying, "May the 4th be with you."

She and Blansett are hoping to make the Mental Health Day activities in McAlester an ongoing event moving forward, building on the previous one held in 2023.

"This is our second annual Mental Health Day," Beene said.

Organizers said everyone is welcome to attend the Mental Health Day event in downtown McAlester.

"Come out and show your support," said Beene.
