Men's Final Slalom Alpine Ski World Cup Race In Kranjska Gora Cancelled

FIS Alpine announced to X (twitter) on March 6th that the men's Audi FIS Ski World Cup slalom in Kranjska Gora (SLO) in Kranjska Gora has been canceled due to extremely heavy rainfall over the last 24 hours, completely destroying conditions.

This comes shortly after the cancellation of the GS race due to warm temps and lack of snow.

Plans pivoted, and with daytime temps in the 60s, the venue, which was set to host the World Cup GS, was changed to accommodate a slalom event. Slalom courses require less width and length.

Although the event organizers planned to still run the slalom race on March 9th, heavy rain in the last 24 hours changed that plan. Conditions were deemed unsuitable to race, and therefore, bad weather claimed yet another FIS race this season.

This cancellation affected numerous ski racers relying on this race for final points this season.

Specifically, this cancellation ruins Switzerland’s Marco Odermatt’s possibility of tying Sweden’s Ingemar Stenmark’s record of 14 consecutive World Cup victories in a single discipline this season.

At this time, the top 25 racers from the regular season have now secured their invitations to the finals.

However, this cancellation means it is the end for US racer Tommy Ford, who was hoping to qualify for his seventh career GS finals, as well as Alpine Canada Alpin’s Erik Read, who missed out on his chance for a fifth consecutive World Cup GS final.

Stifel US Ski Team’s River Radamus had his first podium finish this season, on home turf, ended things on a high note in 9th overall.
