Memorial Day weekend: Mohawk Valley parades and services honoring fallen military

While some may be traveling this holiday weekend, local events to honor the lives of military members lost will be held throughout the Mohawk Valley.

Here are some of the local parades and memorials being held this Memorial Day weekend:

Utica

Utica Memorial Day Parade and Wreath Laying

  • When: 10 a.m. Monday, May 30

  • Where: St. Elizabeth Campus of the Mohawk Valley Health System, 2209 Genesee St.

Utica's Memorial Day parade begins in front of the St. Elizabeth Campus of the Mohawk Valley, continuing north on Genesee Street to Memorial Parkway before ending at the Parkway Recreation Center.

Following the parade, American Legion Post 229 will hold its annual wreath-laying ceremony at the Soldiers & Sailors monument at Oneida Square, the Oneida County Vietnam Monument, the POW/MIA Monument, the Spanish American Monument, World War I/World War II/Korean War Monument, Utica’s Purple Heart Monument, the Honoring All Veterans Monument and the Gold Star Mothers Monument at the Utica Post Office at 100 Pitcher St.

Holland Patent

Holland Patent American Legion Memorial Day Parade

  • When: 10 a.m. Monday, May 30

  • Where: Holland Patent Middle School, 9601 Main St., Holland Patent

After being canceled the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the American Legion Post 161's Memorial Day Parade will return this year, with special guest Vice Admiral Ron Boxall joining the parade and following services.

The parade kicks off at 10 a.m. Monday at Holland Patent Middle School, before ending at Legion hall at 9550 Depot St. in Holland Patent.

Anyone who'd like to participate can call the American Legion Post at 315-865-992.
