- Members of the Spinal Muscular Atrophy community created Double Take, a first-of-its-kind adaptive fashion runway show where people with SMA headed down the runway wearing chic clothing adapted to them by Open Style Lab.

SAWSAN ZAKARIA: Adaptive fashion doesn't have to be not-stylish. And I think that's where a lot of adaptive fashion is right now. Now we're bringing glamor into the mix. And so that was kind of the point of all of these like glamorous outfits is like, sure, we have like adaptive clothing lines that are starting, but none of them are high fashion.

- Open Style Lab worked with the models to ensure that the clothes not only fit their needs, but also their personalities.

JAMES IAN: So it is adaptive. One of the things that I told my OSL fellow was like I have finger dexterity issues. And so like buttoning stuff is like, zipping stuff can be hard. And so there are actually magnetic fasteners for my buttons right here, which is like really, really helpful, because it can take me a while to do that. In terms of design, I'm a big wolf fan.

I have a lot of wolf shirts. I have a wolf tattoo. So I told them this, so they put a wolf on my back, and they added like my name to it, which is like the coolest thing. So I helped with that, but like they just went beyond what I thought it was going to be and made it beautiful. And I'm through the roof about it.

JENNA DEWAR: You know, and everyone we kind of talked to them about like how they wanted to feel. And so, for instance, James is like, he is a rock star. So we want him to feel like a rock star. That's why we did the big wolf embroidery. He loves wolves. So like, yeah, let's do it. Let's do it up.

Like Sawsan really wanted to feel very sexy and glamorous, so we like really pushed that angle. You know, we tried to make it really glam. And so I think it's all about trying to make people feel exactly how they want to express themselves to the world.

- Double Take is sponsored by Genentech, as part of the SMA My Way program, which was built to support and raise awareness for the SMA community.

- Where did the name Double Take come from?

MICHAEL DUNN: That's a great question. We want everyone to do a double take, but for the right reasons and not the wrong reason. What I mean by that is often individuals will do a double take because the person has disabilities. And that's not what we want people to do a double take for.

We want them to do a double take for their individual style and fashion. Regardless of disability or not, fashion is a way of self-expression and self-esteem. And that's why we want people to do a double take, for the individualistic style of the individual.
