From the striking pictures recently released of the Duchess of Cambridge by Paolo Roversi to the classic images taken of the young Queen by Cecil Beaton, royal photographs have an important place in history. And now the public is invited to have their personal images displayed next to some of the most iconic royal photographs in a new exhibition at Kensington Palace.

Curators for the exhibit Life Through A Royal Lens, which will open at the Palace in March, are asking the public to submit images they have taken of the royal family. This could include photographs during a royal walkabout, pictures from the crowd at royal events such as Trooping the Colour, or perhaps even mementos of you or someone you know getting to meet the royals. Up to 20 images will be selected by curators to feature alongside work by renowned royal photographers throughout the ages.

“We’re so excited to invite the public to be part of our upcoming Kensington Palace exhibition in this unique way,” says Claudia Acott Williams, Curator at Historic Royal Palaces. “We can’t wait to see images shared from royal visits around the globe, and it’ll certainly be a tough challenge to whittle them down to the chosen few, which will be displayed amongst legendary photographers. We look forward to welcoming our visitors into the world of royal photography, to explore the history behind the iconic image of modern monarchy we know today.”

Members of the public wishing to submit their images can do so online with the proviso that they were taken during an official appearance, entrants are 18 or over, and either took the image or have the express permission of the photographer.

“From the stiff formality of the Victorian era, through the high glamour of Cecil Beaton’s photographs of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, to the relaxed informality of the digital age, for almost 200 years the medium of photography has created an unprecedented intimacy between Sovereign and subjects.” Historic Royal Palaces, which manages the public openings of Kensington Palace, said in a statement.

Life Through a Royal Lens opens at Kensington Palace on 4 March 2022 and is included in palace admission. To enter visit hrp.org.uk. Entries close on January 31.
