Melissa McCarthy Reportedly Applied CBD Oil to Her Feet to Stay Comfortable in Her Oscars Heels

You probably didn't see them under her caped Brandon Maxwell jumpsuit, with its drapey, floor-skimming pants, but Melissa McCarthy was wearing some pretty fancy shoes at the Academy Awards. And by "pretty fancy," I mean pretty painful, as so many especially high high heels can be. But McCarthy reportedly prepared for a long night of smushed toes with a remedy that's been gaining a lot of fans.

As Bustle reports, the E! Live From the Red Carpet team said that the best-actress nominee applied CBD oil to her feet while getting ready for the big night. With all the buzz CBD's been getting, McCarthy had likely heard that THC-free cannabidiol is becoming widely known for its ability to alleviate pain without getting users high.

In addition to lots of anecdotal evidence, an increasing number of experts support using CBD to prevent and relieve discomfort. According to registered dietitian, nutritionist, and holistic cannabis consultant Janice Newell Bissex, CBD is "a potent anti-inflammatory." Some people take it orally, but using it topically is also an option. According to Bonni Goldstein, a physician in Los Angeles and medical advisor for Weedmaps, spot treating with CBD, essentially what McCarthy reportedly did, allows you to get relief where you need it most. "It’s unlikely to penetrate deep enough to get into the bloodstream," she says, "and it tends to accumulate in the upper skin layers.”

McCarthy isn't the only fan of this foot hack. According to The Hollywood Reporter, stylist Kate Young uses a cannabis-based numbing cream on the feet of her celebrity clients, including Rachel Weisz, Margot Robbie, and Selena Gomez, "so that heels hurt less." Cindy Capobianco, the cofounder of Lord Jones, a brand known for its High CBD Formula Body Lotion, told Yahoo Lifestyle that, "Applying CBD half an hour before wearing shoes, especially high heels, is very effective because it acts as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory, so it reduces pain and swelling."

In case that didn't work, McCarthy told Access Hollywood that she also brought a thermos of Scotch to the Oscars, and changed into sneakers for the Vanity Fair Oscar party. So, one way or another, she probably ended up feeling pretty comfortable.
