Melanie Lynskey and Jason Ritter's Entire, Unbelievably Sweet Relationship Timeline

To borrow the most over-used expression from....what, 2016?...Melanie Lynskey and Jason Ritter are couple goals. Like, I'm sorry but it's just a fact! These two couldn't be more sweet or mutually supportive of each other if they tried, and—amid Melanie's career absolutely thriving—the time has come to take a look back on their relationship. Starting with when they first connected in 2012, a year I literally cannot remember.

Melanie and Jason hang at some fancy brunch, full of other actors, so we know they've at least been friends since this time!

Melanie and Jason star in The Big Ask, which is presumably when they started dating (since E! News reported they'd been together four years at the time of their engagement in 2017).

The pair later tell Drew Barrymore the early days of their relationship were pretty complex: "We were both going through very difficult times in our lives. We were both going through breakups," Melanie says. "It was a very tumultuous time."

"It's not as cute of a story as you would like to think. It was messy and interesting and weird," Jason adds. "In the mix, I was dealing with some alcoholism issues. At a point, I knew how amazing she was, and I thought she would be incredible for someone, someone who deserved her, basically, and I didn't feel like I was that person. I felt a little bit too crazy.... It was only after a year into not drinking that I go, 'Oh, maybe I can promise some things to someone else.' So I knew that she was incredible. It was working on myself to think that maybe I could be the one for her too."

So, I was like, 'We have to get married tomorrow.'"

"We got married on our front porch of our little rental house in Atlanta. A nice lady came and married us. We had two friends there. Ali Ahn and William Jackson Harper… They brought a cake and flowers and everything we needed. It was actually a very fun wedding day, but it didn't need to happen. He could totally have gotten into Canada."
