Melania Trump's suit with skinny tie is a 1980s throwback

Melania Trump embodied the ’80s in a pinstriped suit with a skinny tie.

The first lady and the president met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, at the White House on Wednesday to discuss the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) — an agreement between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to remove tariff barriers. In the past, President Trump has threatened to dissolve the deal in the absence of a more favorable one.

While Sophie was outfitted in an A-line dress and carried a red-white-blue striped handbag, Melania, 47, wore a charcoal pinstriped suit with loose-fitting trousers by Ralph Lauren and a black skinny tie left undone.

Melania has been experimenting with menswear lately. In September, to the United Nations General Assembly in New York City, she wore a $1,995 Calvin Klein gray, double-breasted wool blazer and houndstooth pants, along with spiky black heels. She showed off the look by posing for cameras with one hand tucked into her trouser pocket.

Melania’s buttoned-up appearance was called impeccably appropriate for the first lady, a role which Melania is reportedly accepting with enthusiasm, after a slow start. In September, three months after moving to the White House, Melania gave an antibullying speech to world leaders amid an internet circus that erupted over the $2,950 neon-pink Delpozo dress she wore while delivering her remarks.

And on Monday, Melania clarified her position after Trump’s first wife, Ivana, said in a Good Morning America interview, “I have a direct number to the White House. I [don’t] really want to call him there, because Melania is there, and I don’t want to cause any kind of jealousy or something like that, because I’m basically first Trump wife. OK? I’m first lady.”

Melania responded with a statement that read, “Mrs. Trump has made the White House a home for Barron and The President. She loves living in Washington, D.C., and is honored by her role as First Lady of the United States. She plans to use her title and role to help children, not sell books. There is clearly no substance to this statement from an ex. Unfortunately, only attention-seeking and self-serving noise.”

On Tuesday night, the Trudeaus spent quality time with another Trump, hitting Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit and Gala in Washington, D.C., with Ivanka, who wore a $1,127 white trumpet-sleeve dress by Roland Mouret and large black earrings.
