What Melania Trump Wore for Tea Time with the Spanish Queen

In the midst of chaos surrounding the issue of the Trump administration's zero-tolerance immigration policy, which has led to the separation of thousands of immigrant parents and their children at the U.S. border, the First Lady entertained the Spanish Queen for tea.

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia—in a hot pink Michael Kors shift dress—stepped out at the White House for a diplomatic visit on Tuesday afternoon. Following a photo opp in the Oval Office, King Felipe VI and President Trump had an extended one-on-one meeting, while the ladies headed to the Red Room for tea. According to USA Today, the First Lady said nothing that reporters caught.

After a series of plain-and-simple beige ensembles, Melania seemed to return to her high-fashion self wearing a sage calf-length dress by Valentino featuring white botanical applique. She paired the look with—what else—matching pointed-toe stilettos, her go-to style.

Queen Letizia honored her hosts by wearing an American designer, whereas Melania opted for an Italian rather than Spanish fashion house. Unlike her predecessor Michelle Obama, Melania only occasionally deigns to wear designers who hail from the country of her guests. (When the Trumps hosted French President Emmanuel Macron, her look was a no-brainer—she wore Chanel.) The Spanish Royals were wrapping up a five-day goodwill tour which included stops in cities with Spanish history such as San Antonio and New Orleans, according to USA Today.

Earlier this week, FLOTUS made a splash as she acknowledged that the controversial immigration policy was in need of an update. Via her communications director, Stephanie Grisham, the First Lady said she "hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform."

All four former living First Ladies were not quite as delicate with their words. Laura Bush called the policy "immoral" and "cruel," while Hillary Clinton called in “an affront to our values."

The First Lady's approval rating spiked earlier this spring, according to a poll conducted by CNN. However, a new poll from June 14-17 saw her rating take a dip, down to 51% from last month's high of 57%. The drop took place following her reemergence following surgery for a benign kidney condition.

While the meeting was taking place, it was reported that the Trump administration would be withdrawing form the U.N. Human Rights Council—the very same council which recently criticized the practice of separating parents and children at the border. (The reason given was that the organization is anti-Israel.)

And, of course, across the pond, our other favorite royals were stepping out for a day of horse racing. Newly minted Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle attended her very first Royal Ascot, arm-in-arm with her top-hat-wearing hubby Prince Harry.

Up next on the royal front? The Trumps are reportedly headed to Kensington Palace to visit the Queen on July 13. Godspeed.
