Melania Trump likes 'Insecure,' so will Issa Rae cancel it?

Although she’s busy doing work for her Be Best initiative, it seems that Melania Trump still has time to watch TV. But Insecure creator and star Issa Rae doesn’t want to be making the show the first lady is tuning in to.

In an interview with Glamour, the actress spoke about the success of her HBO show and acknowledged the way she maintains an authentic storyline that deals with black women living in Los Angeles while it’s undergoing gentrification. And although half of the viewers are nonblack, she says that having people of color on staff is what keeps it real, in addition to the response she gets from black viewers — namely the Obamas.

Recalling a specific conversation with Michelle Obama, where it was revealed that the former first lady is a fan, Rae said, “It was like talking to my auntie. It bums me out that I will never have that feeling again of the First Family f***ing with us so hard and getting us.”

When asked what her reaction would be if Trump said she was a fan, Rae responded, “I would be like, ‘Well, I guess it’s canceled. We’re not making this show. It’s not ours anymore.’”

When Page Six reported on Rae’s comments, the first lady’s director of communications, Stephanie Grisham, decided to confirm the ironic truth that Trump, in fact, is a fan.

People immediately started to respond to Grisham’s tweet, calling it “unprofessional and tacky,” while also pointing out that the tone seemed to contradict FLOTUS’s initiative against “petty” online bullying. But Rae decided to shut the comment down herself by asking, “Melania or the double?”

Rae, of course, was hinting an unfounded internet conspiracy theory that the first lady has a body double who has been making public appearances in the real Melania’s stead.

Rae’s fans replied with a number of Insecure memes to praise the quick clapback, with the hope that Rae wouldn’t cancel the show after all.
