Melania Trump expected to resurface for Monday's Gold Star event — but there's a catch

It’s been almost a month since Melania Trump has been seen in public and weeks since she reportedly underwent surgery for what was described as a “benign kidney condition.” But with speculation about her whereabouts at a fever pitch, the first lady is poised to return to the spotlight — sort of.

As CNN reports, Stephanie Grisham, spokeswoman for the first lady, has confirmed that Trump will attend a White House event Monday honoring Gold Star families — those who have a lost a relative in battle. It will be the first official event she has attended — and her first sighting — since May 10, when she was seen greeting the three American detainees newly freed by North Korea.

The day before that, she joined President Trump and his daughter Ivanka as he signed an executive order to support the hiring of military spouses in the federal government.

But don’t hold out hope for a glossy photo op. Grisham noted to CNN that the Gold Star event is closed to the media, though it’s possible that she may issue a statement afterward. Grisham added that Trump and her staff have been keeping busy with meetings and planning White House events.

Those events won’t include this week’s G7 meeting in Quebec or Trump’s June 12 trip to Singapore, both of which Grisham confirmed FLOTUS would skip. She was also absent from a Trump family trip to Camp David over the June 2 weekend.

The first lady downplayed rumors about her disappearance last week, admonishing the media for “working overtime” to explain her absence.

If Monday’s Gold Star event comes and goes without satisfying curious minds, there may be a resolution by month’s end. Grisham has said that Trump is planning the Congressional Picnic, which in 2017 took place in late June — and is thus, presumably, just weeks away. She’s also hammering out the details for the White House’s Independence Day celebrations.
