There was an underlying message behind the stunning Carolina Herrera gown that the Duchess of Sussex wore to announce she was expecting her second child, revealed designer Wes Gordon.

In a new interview with The Telegraph, the designer explained that sustainability was top of mind for the duchess when selecting what to wear for her pregnancy announcement, hence her decision to wear a dress given to her two years prior.

"I made [the dress] for her when she was pregnant with Archie, so almost two years ago. There's a reality, it's 2021, and we have a world to save, right? This is an undeniable crisis, and everyone has to do their part," Gordon told The Telegraph. "At Herrera, we're committed to pursuing sustainable fabrics. But the number one thing that someone can do for sustainability is hold on to those pieces you buy and use them for a longer amount of time. That's why I think what Meghan did is such a powerful message."

Gordon continued, expressing the importance of investing in clothing items that will bring joy year after year. Despite the dress being a few years old, it made the Duchess of Sussex "feel no less special or no less happy."

Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, announced their big baby news on Valentine's Day with a gorgeous black-and-white photo of the pair in a garden setting appearing overjoyed and relaxed. The couple choosing to release the news on the holiday was a meaningful ode to Harry's late mother, Princess Diana, who announced her pregnancy with Harry on the same day nearly four decades prior.
