Meghan Markle Wrote Her Own Instagram Captions for @SussexRoyal

From Town & Country

When it comes to social media, senior members of the royal family are pretty hands-off.

Yes, royals sometimes share personal posts on their household accounts, but it tends to be a rare occurrence. In 2018 for example, Prince William signed a few Kensington Palace tweets about the World Cup. And earlier this summer, the Duchess of Cambridge commented on submissions for her Hold Still photo project on Instagram. But they aren't logging on all the time.

In contrast, when the Sussexes separated their household from that of Prince William and Kate, and subsequently launched their own Instagram account, @SussexRoyal, Meghan Markle reportedly drafted many of her own posts.

Per Finding Freedom, the new biography of the Sussexes by reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, one of Harry and Meghan's "core frustrations" with their position within the royal family was their "inability to speak for themselves." Instead, they had to go through the royal family's communications team.

"Launching the account was a somewhat liberating experience for Meghan," an aide shared with the authors. "Not having a platform of her own to talk directly to the public was one of the toughest changes for her, especially after building so much of her own brand on Instagram and her blog. @SussexRoyal meant that she finally had a place to curate."

She and Harry were involved in the aesthetic decisions for the handle, including selecting the rich shade of blue often used as a background color for quotes, and they made the choice to add a white border to photos. "Meghan drafted a lot of the posts herself in the early days," reveal the authors. "It was one of the things that kept her occupied during her final days of pregnancy."

The account was incredibly successful, rapidly gaining fans, and illustrating the Sussexes' work in a new way, but it was short-lived. Harry and Meghan shared one final post on March 30, thanking their followers "for the support, the inspiration and the shared commitment to the good in the world."

They had agreed to stop using the "Sussex Royal" branding now that they stepped back from their working roles within the family. At this point, it's unclear when, if, or in what form they will return to the platform.
